How dentists actually get more patients from Google

There is a correct order to this, and almost every clinic starts in the wrong place. The right first move is free and takes about an hour.

Most clinics approach Google backwards. They commission a website, then wonder why nothing happens, then buy monthly SEO, then buy ads. Meanwhile the free thing that would have produced the most patients — a properly configured Google Business Profile — sits 40% complete.

Here is the correct sequence, with honest timelines.

Understand what you are competing for

A patient types “dentist near me” on a phone. What appears, in order:

  1. Sometimes an ad or two.
  2. The map pack — three clinics with stars, distance and a Directions button. This takes the overwhelming majority of clicks.
  3. Organic blue links, well below the fold.

You are competing for one of three map pack slots. Google decides them on relevance (does your profile match the search), distance (which you cannot change), and prominence (reviews, recency, citations, site authority). Two of those three live on your Google Business Profile, not your website.

Step 1 — Fix the profile (week 1, free)

An hour of work, no cost, and the highest return available to you. Primary category set to Dentist; every true secondary category added; every treatment listed as a service in patient language with an honest price band; twenty-plus real photographs including the sterilisation area; accurate hours; an appointment link.

We published the whole method step by step: Google Business Profile for dentists. Nothing is held back in it.

Step 2 — Build a review habit (weeks 1–12)

Review count and recency are among the strongest prominence signals, and twenty reviews from the last six months beat sixty from 2019.

What works is a process, not a poster: your front desk sends the short review link by WhatsApp within two hours of the appointment, to the specific patient who just said the visit went better than expected. Reply to every review within a day, positive and negative.

Ten genuine reviews a month is achievable for any clinic seeing twenty patients a day, and after six months it is close to decisive in most localities.

Step 3 — Make the site fast (weeks 2–4)

Now the website matters — because the profile is sending it traffic. The first job is speed: sub-second on 4G. Most clinic sites are five to seven seconds, which means a large share of the traffic you just earned bounces before it sees your name.

The usual causes are a page builder, an image carousel, unoptimised hero images and a stack of plugins. If your site is on a heavy theme, this is often not fixable by tuning — it is fixable by rebuilding.

Step 4 — Locality and treatment pages (weeks 4–10)

You cannot rank for “dental implants in Sector 50” without a page about dental implants that mentions Sector 50 and genuinely serves that search.

Build one page per treatment that matters to your revenue — usually implants, aligners and root canal treatment first — each with honest pricing bands, timelines, real before-and-afters, the doctor who performs it, and reviews from patients who had it. Then a page for each locality you genuinely draw from.

Step 5 — Answer real questions (ongoing)

“Is root canal painful”, “how long do dental implants last”, “braces or aligners — which is better for adults”. These searches reach patients before they have chosen a clinic, which is the cheapest moment to reach them.

They also matter for AI search. ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity cite pages that answer the question directly with specifics. Publish real numbers and plain answers, and you get cited. Publish “world-class care with cutting-edge technology” and you do not, because it contains no information.

What to expect, and when

ActionFirst visible effect
Completing the Google Business Profile2–6 weeks
New site indexed for brand terms1–3 weeks
“Dentist in [locality]”6–10 weeks
“Dental implants in [city]”4–6 months
City-level head terms9–18 months, if at all

And the strategic point most agencies will not make: do not chase the city-level term. “Dentist in Delhi” is expensive to win and brings people who will not travel to you. Own your six surrounding localities completely and you fill more chairs for a fraction of the effort.

What not to spend money on

Skip these

  • Backlink packages. Risk with no upside for a local clinic.
  • Directory submission services. Two hundred listings on dead directories do nothing.
  • Bought reviews. Google detects the pattern, removes them, and may suspend the profile.
  • Blogging on a schedule with nothing to say. Four genuinely useful pages beat forty thin ones.
  • Ads before the profile is fixed. You are paying for clicks that a free listing would have brought you.

Complete your Google Business Profile properly and start requesting reviews by WhatsApp within two hours of each appointment. It is free, takes about an hour to set up, and typically shows in the map pack within two to six weeks.

Yes. The profile wins the position; the website converts the click. A profile pointing at nothing, or at a slow site, wastes the ranking you earned.

More, and more recent, than the three clinics currently in the pack for your locality. In an established Noida sector that could be sixty-plus; in a new Greater Noida society, twenty recent reviews can take position one.

For specific high-value treatments, sometimes. As a substitute for fixing your profile and site, no — you end up paying for clicks you would have received free.

Two to six weeks for profile-driven map pack movement, six to ten weeks for locality searches, four to six months for competitive treatment terms.
